Aimee Brown and the Little Gray Dress

Aimee Brown is here today to mark the release of her debut novel, The Little Grey Dress. Thank you Aimee and happy pub day.

What is your book about?
The official blurb is: Emi Harrison has avoided her ex-fiance, Jack Cabot, for nearly two years. Her twin brother Evan’s wedding is about to end that streak.

From bad bridesmaid’s dresses, a hyperactive sister-in-law, a mean girl with even meaner secrets, and too much to drink, nothing seems to go right for Emi, except when she’s wearing her little gray dress.

When she speed-walks into Liam Jaxon’s bar, things get more complicated. He’s gorgeous, southern, and has no past with Emi. He may be exactly what she needs to prove for the last time that she doesn’t need or want Jack!

Her favorite little gray dress has made an appearance at nearly every major event in Emi’s adult life. Will it make another grand appearance when she least expects it?

So, to sum it up you could say it’s about weddings, engagements and nonsense 😉

What inspired the storyline to your novel?
I’ve always been obsessed with anything weddings since I was young. I myself got married at the courthouse, 20 years ago, in a 5-minute ceremony. I’ve never even tried on a wedding dress. Do I regret it? A little. But, it’s been 20 years so I won’t complain too much.

I’m also told pretty regularly how funny I am and I think I was able to portray that in the book. Life is anything but boring so I wanted to mix a serious life problem with humor and voila… Little Gray Dress was born.

How long did it take you to write your novel?
I’ve been a little afraid of answering this question. LOL I wrote this book during the November 2016 NaNoWriMo. The first draft took me 10 days. The second draft took me an additional 14 days. I then sent it out to a handful of beta readers and spent about 7 days cleaning it up and perfecting it. So overall, a month. I guess when you find your story, it comes pretty easily.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
Truly, the characters wrote this book. It was so much fun getting to know them and their stories. It’s like I’ve created a whole group of friends, just waiting to welcome me in every time I open a blank screen. That’s surely my favorite part of writing, the new friends I create that become a part of who I am. Or… maybe they are a part of me… something.

What did you research the most while writing this book?
The book is mostly set in Portland Oregon, a city I lived in for many years as an adult. I love the city and I did a lot of research on places within the city just to be accurate, even though I’ve been to these places a thousand times. I also did a lot of wedding related research as well as beauty treatments gone wrong.

For those who have not discovered your novel, how would you describe it to get them interested?
I told someone recently that I was kind of ‘Bridget Jones meets Love Actually’. That’s pretty accurate of the book too, I’d say. I’m a hopeless romantic who loves happy endings but I hate when it’s too gut-wrenchingly beautiful because that’s just not life. The book would definitely fall into the fun rom/com of the 90’s movie era.

Who’s your favourite character arc of all time, fiction/or onscreen and why?
Please excuse me while I daydream for a bit… lol. Wow, well, obviously I’m a lover of chick lit and a character that has always stood out is Becky Bloomwood. She’s just so likable and relatable.

I also loved Meg Cabot’s main character from the Size 12 is not Fat series, Heather Wells. She’s funny, sarcastic, and not perfect. That’s something I really worked on when writing Little Gray Dress’s main character Emi Harrison.

What inspired you to want to write books?
Honestly, one day when my kids were young I was bored and for some reason opened up Word and just started writing. That was 10 years ago. I’ve since done ½ a Bachelors degree in English/Creative Writing (finishing up now). When I took my first creative writing class back in 2009, I got such amazing feedback that I was hooked. I knew I could do it, I just had to find the story that would help me accomplish that. Apparently, Little Gray Dress was that story.

What do you think makes the best character arc?
Someone real, with imperfections. I don’t love reading about the picture perfect girl, with a size 0 frame, clear skin and a saint of a person. Give me curves, a potty mouth, and sarcasm and I’ll find my new BFF.

Are you working on anything new at the moment?
I am. I don’t want to say what exactly but Little Gray Dress was meant to be a 2 book series, following Emi after Little Gray Dress and into her new ‘unexpected’ yet ‘one expected’ life.

My early reviewers have nearly all sent over an email requesting a book on a certain character from the story and so… that may or may not be what I’m working on right this moment.

I’ve also finished about ¼ of a stand alone book that is set in a vintage Tiki bar… it’s fun, romantic and, ghostly…?

What is the theme or take home message of your book? Life is unexpected. Things never go as planned and are often not what they seem.

Also, we live in a day in age where people are judged for everything they do or say. I recently saw a news story based soley on the fact that a woman/mother used the F word. News Flash – women curse. In fact I rarely have a sentence leave my lips without a curse. Little Gray Dress’s main character Emi, is a real woman, she’s not perfect, she often blurts out the words that could make a grown man blush and I hope that you fall in love with her as much as I did.

Thank you for your time. Thank you so much for having me! I’ve loved answering your questions!
