Anton Marks is the author of several urban fantasy supernatural thriller novels and today he is here to talk about Joshua N’Gon: Last Prince of Alkebulahn that’s out today.
What’s your book about?
The book is about fourteen year old Joshua N’Gon who discovers from his foster parents in London, that he is descended from alien royalty in Africa. He is gifted with extraordinary talents and with his friends Brick, Meena and Zion he is navigating school and discovering who he is really is. Joshua soon comes to realize powerful forces are interested in him for the wrong reasons and will stop at nothing to pry the secrets he unknowingly has from him.
What inspired the story line for your novel?
I grew up watching animated adventure stories, Sci-Fi TV and comics. I’ve always read widely then and now but continue to be disappointed with the lack and how people of colour have been represented in Speculative fiction. I decided to change that with Joshua N’Gon: Last Prince of Alkebulahn.
What did you research the most while writing this novel?
African culture, history and science
How long did it take you to write your novel?
12 months but the others in the series will take substantially less time.
What inspired you to want to write books?
Ever since I could remember I wanted to create my own stories. I think genre films, TV and books where my main inspiration.
What did you enjoy most about writing this novel?
Creating the world that Joshua inhabits was really fun. In a way it’s a kind of a alternative history novel because although we are dealing with alien technology I merged fact with fiction. I took some liberties with science and history but it helped to improve the overall story.
For those who have not discovered your novel, how would you describe it to get them interested?
Joshua N’Gon: Last Prince of Alkebulahn is an exciting Young Adult Contemporary Sci-Fi tale, that has our young hero Joshua N’Gon trying to understand his unbelievable gifts with his friends while fighting against shadowy forces who are hell bent on studying or killing him.
Are you working on anything new at the moment?
I’m working on a short story and the second in the series of my supernatural thriller Bad II the Bone.
What is the theme or take home message of your book? Do we truly know who we are? What will your contribution to the world be?
