Pauline Wiles: If I Knew Then What I Know Now, an Author’s Journey #11. Author of Saffron Sweeting and Secrets of the Sky.
Keep up the Momentum.
Like many first-time authors, I was so excited to complete and publish my first novel that I didn’t really give much thought to what would come next. Of course, before the book was published, I didn’t know that it would be so well received, or that many kind reviewers would ask for a sequel. And in the months before publishing Saving Saffron Sweeting, I had my hands more than full with the logistics of producing and distributing a quality product.
Nonetheless, I believe I could have given more thought to my second and third novels – and beyond – before releasing the first. As an unknown author, momentum is helpful: it would be lovely, for example, for a reader who enjoyed the first book to be able to purchase the second immediately. And although I’m now working hard on the follow-up and plan to release it this year, I’m fearful that many readers will have forgotten who I am and why they liked the first.
Despite all this, I know I can’t afford to rush the second book and have no intention of giving fans anything except my best work. As is so often true in life, building word of mouth amongst book-lovers is a marathon, not a sprint. If a few people forget about Saffron Sweeting before the next instalment is ready, then I’m still confident that those who really loved the village can quickly be reminded. And, this now being my second time around, I believe my overall writing, editing and production process will be a little quicker. I just hope I can pull off the same charm which has made the first book popular with readers.
Tips for the aspiring writer
It’s great getting that first book written and published, but it’s also important to keep up the momentum with your second and third novels and beyond.
If readers loved your first novel they will be interested to know what else you’ve written, and will definitely want to buy your other books.
Think about your next novel and the next … happy writing.
